How to Treat Gum Disease According to a Dentist

gum disease Auburn, CA

Gum disease has various stages ranging from mild to severe. However, at any stage, some form of treatment is typically required. Treatment helps to stop any infection, as well as to prevent future damage to the soft or hard tissues. With the help of a general dentist, gum disease treatment can be reviewed.

A dentist discusses how to treat gum disease

Below is an overview of how to treat gum disease. General dentists have different recommendations or guidelines for treatment, based on the severity of the patient's gum disease.

Deep cleaning

One of the main ways that general dentists treat gum disease is through a deep dental cleaning, which is different than a traditional routine cleaning with a dental hygienist. A dental deep cleaning goes beyond the teeth and gums, including beneath the gum lines, as well. Deep dental cleanings are usually recommended in the early stages of gum disease when there is not severe damage. Dental deep cleanings are usually painless, but in some situations, an anesthetic can be provided to reduce any discomfort or sensation.

Oral rinse

Another option that a lot of general dentists recommend for treating gum disease is to use an oral rinse, which is often prescribed. Oral rinses contain high amounts of bacteria-destroying agents that remove any infection and reduce inflammation. Oftentimes, general dentists will treat gum disease by prescribing an oral rinse and performing a type of cleaning procedure that clears out the gum lines. Oral rinses are usually recommended for daily use over the course of a few months or until the infection has been cleared.

Scaling and root planing

Scaling and root planing is a procedure that involves clearing out the gum lines, through two parts. Scaling is the first part, in which the general dentist scrapes dental plaque and tartar out. Then, root planing takes place, which involves smoothing out the roots of the teeth. The planing part allows the roots to reattach so that they can get back to being healthy.

Scaling and root planing is typically done in two parts because there is some level of discomfort. However, an anesthetic is administered to reduce pain.

Gum grafting and beyond

When gum disease reaches severe stages, general dentists treat it through surgical procedures, including gum grafts. Gum grafts require the transfer of other soft tissues to the gums to regenerate growth. Gum grafts usually involve multiple procedures, discomfort and a lot of healing. However, the outcome is healthy and strong gums.
