Boosting Your Self-Esteem With Dental Veneers
Making a good first impression can be hard for someone who does not like their smile, but dental veneers can help. This cosmetic dental procedure uses a thin porcelain shell to cover up imperfections such as chipped teeth, gaps in the teeth, broken teeth, discolored teeth, pointy teeth and small-looking teeth. The result of veneer placement is an improved appearance of the smile, and this can greatly boost confidence and self-esteem.
Steps for veneer placement
If someone chooses to get veneers, the procedure typically takes two to three visits to the dentist.
During the initial appointment, the dentist examines the mouth and discusses how many veneers may be needed. If there are other issues, such as cavities or crooked teeth, they will have to be fixed before starting the process of placing veneers.
During this appointment, the dentist removes some of the enamel from each of the teeth. This allows room for the veneers to attach and ensures the patient’s bite will not be impeded. Next, a mold of the teeth is made. This is sent to a lab where the veneers are created. In the meantime, temporary replacements are applied to provide a more normal appearance.
When the permanent veneers are ready, the patient makes an appointment for the placement. Initially, the dentist evaluates the veneers for coloration, shape and fit to ensure an exact match to the patient's existing teeth. They then perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth. This is to remove any bacteria so it does not get trapped under the veneers.
Next, the dentist creates a rough texture on the front of each tooth, which makes it easier to attach the veneer. A dental cement is applied to each tooth and the veneer is placed over the top. A high-intensity light is used to quickly harden the cement. This whole process takes around two hours, depending on the number of teeth being treated.
There is very little, if any, recovery after the veneer procedure. Eating and drinking can resume as normal shortly after the appointment. Some people may initially notice a slight sensitivity to cold and hot due to the removal of the enamel. If rough spots on the teeth are noticed, this is normal and will typically wear down after a few days of eating and brushing the teeth.
The average lifespan of porcelain veneers is between 10 and 15 years. Taking certain precautions can help extend the duration:
- Avoid chewing on hard objects
- Use the back teeth to chew hard or tough foods
- Wear a mouthguard when playing sports
- Wear a retainer or splint at night if you clench or grind the teeth
If someone is unhappy with their smile, veneers may be the answer. A consultation with a dentist can help determine the most effective solution to dental imperfections as well as the pros and cons of dental veneers.
